Yes, we’re fully aware that Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened on literally the last day of July, effectively making it an August movie, and we know that along with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, it will dominate the remaining days of summer (and probably well into fall). So yes, we are basically asking you to choose what your second-most anticipated movie of the month is.
On that note, we gathered the most noteworthy movies hitting theaters in August, listed alphabetically below, and asked you which of them would find a spot on your viewing calendar. Based on your votes, here are the 5 Most Anticipated Movies of August!
1. The End of Oak Street
Release Date: August 14, 2026
Coming in first with 21% of the vote was The End of Oak Street, the latest from It Follows writer-director David Robert Mitchell. The sci-fi mystery follows a family of four as they struggle to survive after a cosmic event transports their neighborhood to an unknown location… that happens to be populated by dinosaurs. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor lead the way as the parents, while the fantastical premise offers plenty of intrigue, and without any major tentpole blockbusters coming in August, it’s easy to see why it tops this month’s list.
2. Coyote vs. Acme
Release Date: August 28, 2026
In a bit of a surprise, Coyote vs. Acme racked up enough votes to come in second. The live-action/animated hybrid centers on the Looney Tunes character Wile E. Coyote, who hires a lawyer to sue the Acme Corporation for its various malfunctioning products, which has prevented Coyote from capturing the Road Runner for decades. Aside from the draw of seeing the Looney Tunes characters on the big screen, the live-action cast includes people like Will Forte, Lana Condor, and John Cena, ensuring the film will maintain the madcap energy its source material is famous for.
3. The Dog Stars
Release Date: August 28, 2026
Ridley Scott’s latest comes in at No. 3, albeit with a bit less fanfare than his last few projects. The Dog Stars stars Jacob Elordi as a pilot who joins up with a former Marine (Josh Brolin) in search of a better life in the wake of a pandemic that has wiped out most of humanity. With Scott at the helm, a supporting cast that also includes Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, and Guy Pearce, and a post-apocalyptic setting, there’s a lot to look forward to here, even if the film hasn’t been hyped up as much as, say, Gladiator II.
4. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma
Release Date: August 7, 2026
Another pleasant surprise this month is Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma showing up at No. 4. This critical darling premiered at Cannes earlier this year, just as its star Hannah Einbinder’s Emmy-winning HBO series Hacks was finishing up its fifth and final season. Einbinder stars in the thriller as a young, queer filmmaker who is hired to direct a new installment of a classic slasher franchise and decides to bring back its original star (Gillian Anderson), only to enter into a sexually charged war with the actress. It’s Certified Fresh at 99% on the Tomatometer, and this is Einbinder’s first major film on the heels of Hacks, so fans are rightfully excited for this one.
5. Cliffhanger
Release Date: August 28, 2026
And finally, we have the reboot of the 1993 Sylvester Stallone actioner Cliffhanger. Departing a bit from the original, the new film centers on Lily James, who plays the daughter of a mountaineer (Pierce Brosnan) who owns a luxury chalet. When she and her sister are ambushed by kidnappers during a weekend excursion, she escapes and sets out to save her sister and father. Cliffhanger only defeated Insidious: Out of the Further by one vote to make it to the fifth slot this month, but with the original film’s action cult-classic status and the strong cast anchoring the reboot, it’s understandable to be cautiously optimistic about it.
